This board works great in the powder. The swallow tail works to keep the nose up and float. The board also performs very well on groomers also carving great with lots of pop. Only reason for 4 stars over 5 is the trouble I had with the shipping not the board itself.
Why Don't You Own One?
I originally became aware of this board by watching Angry Snowboarder, who does a pretty good review on the Archetype. Being in the market for a powder specific board, I picked up this one (160W) along with the Jones Storm Chaser 147. During this season, both boards have seen all conditions. 2' dumps to groomers to slush. The Archetype is magic in powder and as no surprise, this is where the board performs. Getting the nose around takes little effort and at speed is loosely reminiscent of surfing. The wider nose working in conjunction with that deep swallow tail really allows me to maneuver quickly.
Aside from powder this board also rides well on groomers, chop and slush. I was leery about the long swallow tail and the boards ability to rail an edge at high speed on groomers but I have yet to wash the tail out, so the edges hold well and the tail is strong enough to support the turn. Through chop, the board is stable enough. Normally, I ride Burton Custom X's which are super stiff, so I would asses this board in chop along the lines of a Burton Custom or a Capita DOA. Speaking of the tail/swallow tail you CAN ride this board switch! Don't be afraid to send it and land switch.
Quality and construction are on point. Though, I would forgo gloss top sheets because this simply makes the board look like shit with minimal usage. Additionally, all of the little icons are pretty silly to me. I don't need to be reminding of all the "tech", though not as bad as my Jones Ultracraft Splitboard! I am a neither a fan or a hater of The Channel, but because this board has that feature, I was spared buying additional bindings, so that's a side plus for my personal experience. One caveat; the factory wax is sub-standard. Once you get your Archetype unboxed and before you mount the bindings, get it waxed with something high performance so you can milk the potential better. I found the factory wax to be a bit sluggish and sticky in most instances.
The board beat out my Jones Storm Chaser hands down. The Storm Chaser is also a powder-oriented board, but will absolutely smoke your legs on chop and groomers. Ultimately, that board got returned because the scenarios where and when I could ride it were too specific and infrequent. Eventually you will need to get back to a lift and the Storm Chaser falls absolutely flat in that scenario. The Archetype turns into a regular snowboard once out of the powder and is so easy to ride.
In summary, the Archetype is an all-around board with a heart for powder. The gloss finish is prone to scuffing and superficially age the board quickly, but of course will not diminish performance. Upon unboxing, give yours a proper wax job as I found the factory waxing to be insufficient. Lastly, don't be afraid to ride this thing switch.
Love the board, but like it in 162 better than 160W
I had the 162 and loved it, decided to try a 160w and it really changed the ride a great deal. Slow edge change and not as stable. I'll just keep riding the 162, great board all around.
Thanks for your review of this board. We wouldn't recommend the 160W Archetype to anyone who doesn't have at least size US 11 boots as the extra width on the board makes it less nimble and as with all wide boards is more noticeable when ridden with smaller boot sizes than it is designed for.
Took this board to Jackson Hole this past weekend and it did not disappoint. Great board especially in the powder. However, you can definitely ride this in any conditions. Super responsive and does a great job of holding an edge
